American Werewolf Academy - American Werewolf Academy is a band based on the unashamed principles of pop. The band's influences range from 60s proto punk, 70s power pop, post punk to bubblegum rock. Favorite bands of AWA include Guided By Voices, The Who, XTC, The Kinks, Cheap Trick, Roky Erickson, The New Pornographers, and R.E.M.

AWA was formed in the fall of 2003 after Robot Monster Weekend had to call it a day and Slobberbone was taking a break.

Four guys from Dallas, TX are in the band.

This is Redfizz'z seminal featured song. I mean this thing is really brimming with semin. It's like someone filled a blender full of semin and then turned it on to puree with out putting the lid on. Once you wipe it from your eyes you see that the semin is splattered all over the kitchen and drippping off the ceiling fan and slowly running in rivulets down the walls.

It's brash. It's confident. It rocks freely and comfortably without any ironic air quotes. There is a willingness to embrace the dumb fun of rock and to hell with where the f-ing knobs are set. And it's in your faceness dfeels genuine, not some desperate myspace attempt at mattering. Who the hell is this kid, this punk of all people, welcoming me, Cobainsaxsolo, to the academy? The whipper-snapper should be getting welcomed by me god damn it. But then you thprpughly shellacked by the rock and your like, "Oh well thank you for the introduction. Where can I sign up for class?"

Gosh, when the crunchy muted guitar starts in I was really hoping that some snotty-voiced singer would come in with some "rebellious" lyrics over some sort of sing-songy 4-note melody delivered in a faux-faux-California accent, because skatepunk was so great the first time around and I've been holding out for a comeback. I actually shut it off the first two times before I finally decided to go back and check it out.
Something amazing happens at about 23 seconds in- it almost turns into rock 'n' roll! Dig the "oh yeahs", dig the false stops with the "Welcome to the academy", the straight-up rawk guitar solo is really, really #@&%!ing good. The bridge is...tolerable...or...okay, I think the part is DECENT, not sure about the delivery. I've heard the other songs...I'm not sure if the singer just sounds like this or if the song is keyed too high for him to give it as much power as it needs...I'd like to hear it just a pinch lower if he could have a little more strength, so that the high parts are just high enough to have to really dig deep to belt it out.
The song is decent, but the way those verses are performed sort of makes me cringe...

Oh my god, could you imagine this throwback music, with AUTOTUNE? you realize that would rip a whole in the time stream, causing all these "analog is warmer," Fender Tweed playing, clove cigarette smoking, vinyl record collecting bands to come into my living room and force me to listen to them rant how great the good old days their parents were too young to experience were! Of course, at least they'd sing in tune.

of course, I like this band. Don't really see the punk comparison. This is good old american rock'n'roll, and damned good. Even if i hate the stuff.

this is the first song featured on this site that i liked (though i guess i may have missed a few and there's some rejects that were appealing). actually i don't give anything much of a chance, listening to it like 2/3rds through but then again that's why i haven't given any ratings either. anyway good song, good title and band name. so - it's good. as for chord progressions, who gives a #@&%!. no offense.

the chord progression's nothing new and the genre's well-trod, but i'll kiss your ass if this track doesn't work. splendid melody, goosebumpy backing "oh yeahs" and, as cobainsaxsolo so righeously pointed out, an unironic commitment to straight, stupid rocking out. yes, it's a confection. not all music need be intellectual, thank god. melody, rocketeer. you can't put a price on a good melody, and this little baby's got it. it's also got idiosyncrasy -- the vocals come dangerously close to sounding like the usual whine-rock timbre we're all so used to hearing these days, but it's got a good boozy scratch to it. a fun, original take on a well-worn idiom. rock n roll, it seems, will never die.

mmmyeh, I don't get it. It sounds like af dampened guitar with a generic chord progression, "shout the lyrics" garage band. I don't think it's awful, the energy is good, but it's a miss for me. I don't hear any talent in this recording. It's fun for one listen through (even though i listened times), but that's plenty for me.
