The Rubberband - Four high school freshmen who have been playing together for almost three years. They write their own music, and are unsigned. They spend the summer on hiatus, because their band members are usually on different continents but they do as many shows as they can during the school year.

goodnight! had me from beat one. Vocals were definately killer. For some reason or another I really wanted to hear Bon Scott singing this or maybe actually Brian Johnson. No, Bon Scott. Really like the lyric, "I got no dime for down time." At least that's what I hope it said. Man, I would love to just sit in some park somewhere and let this band serenade me and 1500 of my closest friends for like 2 hours while we just get so drunk on natty lite and then after shave.

It's not exactly original, but I still like it. About the point where you say "...I don't have anything to do or really anything to say" is where I start paying attention. But then the middle doesn't take me much of anywhere. I wish that noodling guitar lead line that comes in during the second verse was mixed better, right now it's a little distracting, especially on subsequent listens. However, you reel me back in with the "I need my sleep" ending. You guys definitely have potential, keep rockin!

But what's so great about kittens that they need to be saved? I have allergies to kittens, so I'd rather focus on saving another animal. Maybe meerkats?

For highschool freshmen, you guys are superb.
The singer has the perfect voice for this style of music. The song sounds very underproduced and garage-band-ish, but I think that's where it needs to be. It worked for Jet and White Stripes, of whom you guys remind me of. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't be huge someday. My only criticism is that the song seemed too short.

Seriously. Even if it's more than a little derivative (which it is), and even if it's sorta bandwagon-esque, at least it's brimming with some genuine enthusiasm. That alone makes it more rock 'n' roll than some of the more self-conscious acts the critics have been pissing their pants over the last few years.

i dunno, to me this has more hoensty and is downright stripped of all pretense normally found with any of the current "punk" revivalists played on the radio today.

if i were to pick a cronological moment that their effort harkens back to, it'd be 1981 dischord stuff.

emulating the emulators is something that sadly happens way too often. good point though.

I like this song in a sort of passive way. It's a strange thing, and I can't really explain why I like it that well, but I think some others summed it up below. The attitude and lyrics make the mediocrity of the band work. I don't think the skill level of these guys is exceptional as far as musicianship, and it certainly hearkens back to my highschool band days. 3 stars is better than mediocre and listenable in the sense that I can relate to it on some level... wouldn't buy it and have no desire to download the mp3 for free.

I think that Save the Kittens have made a decent record with this one. Not a revolutionary record, not an especially original record, but a record that shows some definite sparks of potential. There are some great rock ‘n’ roll touches here- in particular, the almost-shambling-but-still-practiced leads that play behind the vocals and the slightly out-of-whack stop-start breakdowns add a lot of charm to the track, and I could see the vocalist blossoming into a classic, fey-voiced punk, in the fine tradition of The Buzzcocks and especially The Undertones, whose Feargal Sharkey the singer’s voice is slightly reminiscent of in spirit. Although the whole thing has the “We wear our super-cool influences on our sleeves” pretense that drives the teenagers wild, in this case they seem to manage that kind of unpretentious pretension that talented young musicians are capable of radiating when they’re just starting out and truly believe that the world can be theirs. They do seem bound a bit by their influences, and I think if they can mature just a bit- but not too much- without some label reaching down to swoop them up, they’ll be able to strike more stirring (emotional and musical) chords- the stone cold, hard as nails act only seems to really work when it’s got some vulnerability behind it (just ask Deborah Harry). But they pull off a pretty awesome feat here, in that in terms of pure, raw energy- if not in terms of songwriting and instrumental prowess-, “I Need My Sleep” fairly handily trumps a lot of the popular, hyper-self-aware 20- and 30-something hipster bands they seem to aspire to. And in fact, one might argue that this record has more dimension to it than some of those acts simply because it seems to hold more honesty. In short, it sounds HUNGRIER. Teenage Kicks? Well, not quite. But if they have a few more of their own, it might not be too far out of reach. Just don’t tell them that, not yet.
Once again, I’m rounding off a little- but I hope they have time and space to develop the right way, ‘cause based on this track they’ve got scads of stars worth of potential.

Good energy; so-so recording; very "garage band" sounding -- that's not necessarily good or bad, just depends on whether you like that sort of thing, I guess. All in all, I enjoyed it, but I felt like I've heard it done a million times before by a million other bands. Also, the drums seemed to have a kind of lagging quality, but maybe I'm just sensitive to that because I'm a drummer.

that's a great way of puting it slowpram. I think the reason people go crazy for this kind of thing is because it sounds like just 3 or 4 guys rocking out- not production, no multitrack magic, no HOT 99 pop formula. just ROCK. Like the bands that used to play at basement parties back in highschool. The western world has become so commercialized and commodified and broken down into demographics, and music like this is (or at least sounds liike, since it's easy to mimic for money) the opposite of that.

yep, this little number rocks. i almost wish the high school thing hadn't been mentioned, because it sounds like a qualification, and this song doesn't need one. it stands on its own merit.

that said, it just gives you a nice little frisson to think that high school kids were able to make such adult, world-weary music. at the same time, it doesn't sound like you're trying to be anything that you aren't. as cobainsaxsolo pointed out, "I don't have anything to do, or really anything to say" is a great sentiment--a sneering, effortless case for apathy.
