Alright. What bugs me about this band of music is sort of hard for me to describe, it's like an annoying mosquito that's flitting just at they very outposts of the periphery of my consciousness. But here are a couple of thoughts.

Hereyou guys are, a perfectly respectable bunch of rockers who have rock instruments and clearly listen to rock music. But listening to this song it sounds like all the fun that should come from hanging out and rocking has been completely leached from the process.

Why is that I ask myslef? Well, for one the decision of what to sing about is a big impediment to having fun. As far as I can tell it's about some chick who left you and you're all like, upset about it. Well, here is my suggestion. Have a show. Lure underage teenagers to the after party and scandalize their orifi to your hearts content. You guys are rockers right? What the hell do you care about some chick and roses and letters for Christ's sake.

Here is this completely chick sentiment chanelled into this rage rock and hardcore screaming and the conterast just comes off as silly. I think its your obligation as rockers to not give two #@&%!s about chicks and feelings. More than anything that preoccupation with sounding like your really, really serious is what bugs me about most of this testosterone driven rock we've seen in the last decade or so. As if acting serious is a short cut to being taklen seriously. There's no sense of irony, humor or sutlety. Listen to how serious we are. We're all like into our art. Our scremaing comes from the heart, Etc. But in most cases it's all a bunch shallow bull#@&%! everyone's screaming about. So

I mean all and all it sounds fine. A technically superior outing to the last song. And, for what its worth, it sounds competitve with the similar family of song out there in the race of market place. But my question to you is as rockers, why is that a race you even want to bother to run.

you have a "better" song?
listening to the tracks you have posted here.. i don't think so.
you should keep the nonstop whining and the programed drum fills to the oxy commercials.
indie films are usually for a more mature audience but you wouldn't know that as you go where the shepherd (pepsi) tells you.
in short: judging from the trailer I WATCHED, the film doesn't appear to be geared toward suicidal rich teenagers. maybe not.

As well, from reading all your reviews, I am starting to think that you don't even play music. You are just on this website to belittle people's music that they have worked hard on. Punk comes directly from a few groups "The New York Dolls" the "Stooges" and "MC5" would be 3 of the very early influences.

Then came the wave of english bands.

Didn't the term punk actually arise from a writer looking to describe a new sound he had heard...lemme go find wikipedia on this one.

The phrase "punk rock" (from "punk", meaning a beginner or novice[1]) was originally applied to the untutored guitar-and-vocals-based rock and roll of United States bands of the mid-1960s such as The Standells, The Sonics, and The Seeds, bands that now are more often categorized as "garage rock".

The term was coined by rock critic Dave Marsh, who used it to describe the music of ? and the Mysterians in the May 1971 issue of Creem magazine[2], and it was adopted by many rock music journalists in the early 1970s.

call a spade a spade. what you guys sound like, whether intentional or not, is a sound that is potentially commercial worthy. there is certainly nothing wrong with that, but don't make the mistake of mis-identifying the inspiration with wrong terminology. well, if you want to be taken seriously.

dude, there is nothing wrong with hating a genre so to speak, but man this is calling the kettle black in my opinion. your style is no doubt directly derivatrive of what is happehing on the "charts" RIGHT NOW. are you saying it is better to be derivative of current artists than of older artists from generations past?
rock always cycles back to it's roots. bandwagon vanilla bands are the core fuel to any pop genre. they all sound the same. and what is the current trend in pop music (rock) is derivative of is Shudder To Think, and Rites of Spring. the originators of the Emo genre.

and by the way, The White Stripe's songs are almost entirely derived from classic blues riffs - and unashamedly so.

Well, his voice is much more to the front here. singmetofire you held your own well in this debate. I think the problem with showing individual songs from a concept album (and you've produced a hard-rock concept album) is that individual songs may seem odd on their own. The lyrical intensity isn't quite present. I think the lyrics need a little editing, and should be made less collegiate. "Take back the rose, take the letters, I'm sleeping alone etc." is just too familiar a sequence. I know it probably echoes real life, but art sometimes needs to extend reality to not be accused of being a cliche. There's a too-heavy beat on the drums which puts me right off--it's like the drummer has a Hellboy hand. There was a drum flourish that I thought may have been overdone, but then realized what a fine drummer he is--and how much better the sound would be if he didn;t bash quite so much--and took a page from Bonham's book--that would rock. All in all this was a little too collegiate for me. However, I did find the arrangement pretty well handled. I liked the ending crescendo--that was very effective. I think QC et al have a point about the rock ebullient quality being missing--but hey, you guys are trying to break some ground. I just don;t think it was entirely successful.

okay, so this song, which no doubt has lot of energy and work invested, it is pop music. pop music (corporate indie/alternative - an oxymoron) in the flavor of A New Found Glory, Sum 41 etc. i guess i am trying to say it sounds like most every other band being played on most radio stations with 14-29 demographics.

i suppose it would be easy to tell i don't really like this type of music, to me it is derivative and watered down, and syrupy-sweet re-interpretation of punk rock. i'd much rather crank up some MDC, or Black Flag, or Dickies or Minor Threat or Bad Religion and on and on.

going back to the lyrics....relationship drama consisting of flowers and letters, i can't really get into or relate to in songs. while i understand that this came from the heart, this just feels too cliched and too high school. also, having an ongoing storyline throughout your album is a fine idea, but if a particular song isn't all that great, you can't just expect the listener to sit through an entire album to make sense of it all. in other words, if a song can't hold its own and only stands up well with the backing of other songs, i think that says something.

that all said, i don't hate your music or think it blows. mostly, i have a hard time relating to it lyrically, and believing that the vocals are expressing emotions (as was said in other threads). to me they're simply too similar to other vocals i hear on the radio today, and i'm not a fan of their whiny quality.

one of my big problems with this song is the lyrics. i don't care if you write about a girl you care about, the subsequent breakup, etc, but i think your description of those things doesn't elevate the material in the way that poetry should. take a look at 'tangled up in blue' (yeah, i know, i don't expect you to be able to write lyrics like dylan, but i'm using it to make a point here) -- it's about the narrator's doomed relationship with a chick, but he makes it into an epic representing an entire period of time in america, and he does it using images we've never seen before and interesting diction. the very first images in your song, letters and roses, are both hackneyed symbols of a relationship. i mean, if "detritus of a relationship" were a category on Family Feud, you can bet that letters and roses would be right at the top of the survey responses. it's okay to sing about common experiences, even cliched ones, but you have to make it your own in some way, idiosyncratize it.

This is a well produced song, weather or not you like the content. The musicianship isn't TERRIBLE, and you know it as well as i do. The storyline, would be interesting if you read it, mabye it's too long, mabye it's hookless, but your being overly rude, based on something else that has nothing to do with this song.
