best thing i've heard in a long time. can't get enough of this song. i've listened to it so many times and the chorus still gives me goosebumps.

i love the guitar at the beginning and how the drums gradually come in - really builds up well to the chorus. love how there's kind of two choruses going on here with the "goodbye" part and then "you're disarming". i'm impressed with the singing because the key you're doing it in, and the first chorus part is not easy. yet the singing comes across so effortlessly and beautifully, despite the obvious difficulty behind it. in other words, i think vocally this would be a hard song to cover, which is a compliment.

i'd love to see the lyrics because i've been straining to make out certain parts. did you play all the instruments?

I guess the guitar is supposed to be out of tune cause it doesn't make me want to smash it against his head. I like the vocal delivery, wait... is there something wrong, kinda an abrupt stop to it all, that can't be right. But a good tune, even like the sloppiness left in there.

So yes this is a fun tune and I love the ending.

I liked this - in an uneven but mostly appreciative way. I don't know what everyone else hears, but I'm getting a VERY strong early-XTC, American Andy Partrige vibe, around Black Sea, before he got more wise and controlled about his songwriting. This tune is most excellent, but still needs a slight bit more "viewing the big picture" of the song as a whole.

For instance - that quirky key change from minor to major and the guitar echoing some of the verse phrase - most tasty, but either could've been repeated at least one more time and used as a subtle hookto pull the song together more.

Short form - good direction, clever, but lacks complete focus - pity about the contrived, "here's where we all fall down" ending, but overall great songsmithing.

Nice vocal approach. Second verse drags a bit and loses the energy, while the second chorus's approach to a more minimalistic instrumentation doesn't quite work, imo. I only say this because I like the chorus itself a fair bit... the way the guitars drop off right before it makes it sound like a missing track or a mistake...

Some neat ideas here. Good melodies.

There are a lot of good sonwriters that put there stuff up here. Not all of them have the advantage of having the studio layering that this song has. To me, this is the difference between a demo and a finished concept. This is what you "demo, not finished" guys need to do. It may cost a couple (several) (hundred) bucks to do, but goddammit, it's worth it in the end.

singmetofire: none of those lyrics you listed are cliches. a cliche is an overused phrase or sentiment, like "don't know what you got till it's gone." do you really hear the phrases you mentioned in lots of conversations and songs? who are you hanging out with? i'll concede that "watch you in your sleep" isn't brand new, but it certainly isn't a concept that's been beaten into the ground.

and i'd say this song doesn't have as conventional a structure as you laid out. (not that i have a problem at all with conventional structures. they work.) as gibney pointed out, it has sort of a pre-chorus, then a real tension-releasing chorus after it. also, i don't think it really has a bridge, at least not where you placed it.

as for the claim that redfizz only puts poorly recorded songs on the homepage, i say: daycare, cracker jackson, gilded age, celeste lear, spork, lamb handler, avi paul weinstein, southern kings entertainment, ginchy, doobie, NYCO, chief smiles, and the heat & the light. and i'm assuming that "last 30 years" comment is intended to mean the stuff you've recorded is groundbreaking or new? because to everyone else's ears in evaluation, it isn't.

now that i've answered all the things it's possible to answer in your comment, on to your more nebulous claims. how am i supposed to answer a comment as vague as "There's nothing different about this guys "songwriting" than a lot of people that have been on the reject stage."? i honestly don't know what you mean. you have to pick a song to compare it to for anyone to respond.

Alright guys, i understand you like the indie, rough sounding music. But it's starting to seem like the only way you can get on the featured page, is with a sub par recording, and anything that sounds like it's been done before in the last 30 years.

This is actually a good song, but DAMNIT, i like to hear something make it's way on the featured page that isn't adult comtemporary. There's nothing different about this guys "songwriting" than a lot of people that have been on the reject stage.

Intro, verse, chorus, verse, bridge. whatever.

Yeah, his lyrics are pretty good, again, this isn't a bad song. But jesus, i don't understand this place.
You dog songs for having cliche lyrics
How is "Dreaming of you, dreaming of me"
"picture of you in the grass"
"Mabye watch you in your sleep"
Not cliche lyrics that have been done before? I find myself asking you guys these questions, and you answer them, and the answers make sense.
Then you post reasons why you don't like a certian song, but then a song, that's recorded to sound like it came out when most of you were into music, and you give it all this patience, and leeway.

The guitars sound like a less effective Nirvana unplugged. The voice is quite interesting, I especially like the ending. However, I think as a whole the song is too patchy--it's not the production, it feels like a quick recording to get an idea down. The hook is certainly derivative (re: the Nirvana unplugged comment). There is something intangibly effective about it though--his deadpan voice has a Byrds after too many acid trips feel to it, with a world-weary effect. I give this THREE STARS because I feel he could have put more effort into the progressions. Effective use of crazy guitar--reminded me a little of teh Tindersticks.

Why does this song end so soon? I also just realized this man is from the great city of Charlottesville. Perchance will you be coming back sometime soon Justin? I'd love to see you. I grew up near the 'ville in the Staunton area. Also, I might mention for those of you who don't know it, Charlottesville is the hometown to Dave Matthews et al. Why does this song end so abruptly?
