yeah, meat, it's interesting, like i've probably said down below, that part of the song was added improv (not in this take, but an earlier take) and wasn't part of the original lyric ideas... my mind grabbed the word/reference/meaning from my life, at that moment, and so it's a bit subconscious, and a bit intentional, in a way that's different from the rest of the song... if this was on sesame street, and one of these things wasn't like the others.... "salvia" would stand out... and the last lines are a bit weaker than the rest of the song... that said, i can't imagine how i could ever change it now. it is what it is... and i love it for what it is... but your feedback is appreciated and understood, i think... (I'm a bit late writing back to you)... thanks again for all the time and kind words.

Yeah, its no personal atack. I don't doubt or question your use of salvia, I (sortof) know you and I know your not some lunatic, and I totally see where you are coming from. Facts aside, any drug reference has a wierd effect on a broad audience, it will endear some and alienate others. We talked about it being a womans name, and you do get that sense from the song, and a great song it is or i wouldn't be bothered to talk about it this much. I started playing this, in hopes of one day recording my version and sending it over to you, and I have a strong connection to the song, the lyrics and the vibe in general, but I have this wierd disconnect with that one line. It is however YOUR song, not trying to edit/censor you, just explaining how I fell. I do include the last verse in my cover as well.

interesting take on it... never occured to me people would take it that way... salvia is a healing plant, it's a shamanic herb, it's to be used for healing, not for drowning sorrows or 'getting high' in a recreational sense...though people do... that's my experience... the use of salvia here in the song was meant to have an ambiguous/double-meaning as well, meaning a request for healing from the herb if you understood it, meaning the feminine healing powers in general, or simply the name of a woman, Salvia, if you didn't know anything about salvia... after the verse had been written, the salvia part of the song wrote itself as i was playing it... i had just had a healing experience with the plant... i take it as valid criticism, i could have said "Julia, won't you take me on home..." and it would have meant a whole different thing, but somehow, I'd feel like I was betraying the inspiration that created it... i never really thought of salvia as a drug, so my use of it came from a pure place... interesting what's happening in culture around me.

i dont know exactly how its just the drug reference. its a welcome change musically, but it goes from being a beautiful and emotional song about missing a woman terribly to a pitiful drown my sorrows in substances type of felling, for me at least. I know salvia is hardly heroin but it just sortof depressing to me.

thanks guys, i can relate to both your comments, i stubbornly resisted cds for a very long time because the i like that special something, that live quality of LPs, i had big arguments... to prove my point, my audiophile college roommate and i did a test, my turntable with paul simon album vs his high end cd player with same album... closed eyes... he had argued CDs were better and he'd prove it in a blind test... during the test, he said LPs were better, claimed my turntable was his CD player... that being said, i'm loving the sound i get with digital, and i love the sound i get recording on a little handheld mono tape cassette recorder, and anything in-between, i like tomatoes plain, and on salads, or in salsa, life is different from different angles, but still endearing... i realize if i'm missing the tape hum, i can always record to tape and then back to digital... thanks again both, in my world you're both right and both comments are valued, i really appreciate the time and comments...

"i really like hearing the hum of the four-track - been working digital and you really lose the warm feel of a song like this."

I cant wait until 10 years from now when everyone sees how dumb this kind of mindset is. Good songs aren't made by tools they're made by people. It doesn't matter what you record on, it's how you use it. That kind of comment is just belittling what you guys have done.

yeah, guess it sounds a bit hippy when i reflect and say it outloud like that, that's why i just like to write songs, some things are probably best left subtle... yeah, i think that's the problem with ingesting it, the shamans go through a pretty lengthy process of preparation to get the active ingredients. that's why i went the tincture route, a mild dose, mixed with water so the alcohol wouldn't burn, held in my mouth, and very slowly i started to feel different... 1/2 hour later, i felt this tension in my neck and throat, realized i still had the stuff in my mouth...

to answer keaves more fully, the salvia verse is a request directed, respectfully, to the power that another woman has to heal us, to provide us with a home, and love, and also partly with salvia in mind, because i'd just had a healing experience with it, and felt grateful as i would to any feminine spirit, be she human or plant...

yes, perception of perception is nicely put. yes, drool, green if you take it orally, it's not an herb i'd recommend, belongs in the realm of shamans, not recreational users... drool, like a nice nap, it's a dissociative, mental awareness is heightened and the birthplace of thoughts become apparent, the body is an afterthought (which is why stronger doses need a supervisor to make sure you don't hurt yourself - see erowid.com)...

a friend noticed that for a week or so after i took it i would randomly and quite appropriately say things that pertained exactly to what he was thinking about or going through, as if it tapped me in to an intelligence from beyond...

some would say that intelligence is salvia herself, but that's a deep topic for redfizz...

this is totally my fave deepwater tune to date. of course, now that i've been hipped to jandek i look at the lo-fi thing a little differently now. listening to jandek is probably a lot like aural salvia. no disrespect meant in any way, in fact it's a compliment. anyway, i like this song.

thanks TheBuyer, thanks Simon, means a lot to me, really.

my lyric partner wrote the basic first verse for me to put to music, and it caught some of my heart's painful memories...

... the chorus, dreams of yesterday (an alternate title), was meant to be taken literally, but it's hidden meaning is about me sitting in the driver's seat of the campus safety shuttle at 2 am, circa 1993, while in college, suddenly crying to McCartney singing Yesterday on the radio, my heart wide open and raw from losing the girl i thought i'd marry, trying to get myself together before having to pick up my next passenger...

my hope or intent for the song is that it might someday do for someone else what I allowed Yesterday to do for me, which was quite healing, as there were a lot of tears that had to come out...

a friend of mine smoked some. said it was the heaviest thing he's ever done. said it cahnged his entire perception of perception. he also said it made him drool on himself and freak out and fall on the ground. i don't personally feel the need to try any new ways of expanding my consciousness but based on his description of his experience, it sounds like huffing air freshener would probably do about the same thing and it would leave the room smelling like a walk down a mountain path after a spring rain.

Salvia does work..i have 2 ounces of it...if you make a tea out of it it will act kinda like a pain killer and give you some cool ass visualls if you lay down..you smoke it and thats another story...better be ready for the wierdest 5 minute trip of your life lol.If the spinning isnt bad enough, the uncomfortable feeling all around you is very unsettling...and when you start asking your bong if it wants a hit...you know your tripping haha. I do like the song and its old fashioned style recording. *Salvia rocks*

This is my bag completely. It's gorgeous, and the rough recording only adds to its charms.

it's effective, the tincture anyway, i wouldn't take more than a bit...

last verse was only 1/2 about salvia, needed a girl's name, salvia came into my mind, went with it...

figured salvia needs her own song.

This sounds like Second Stage all right - Second Stage at a Phish festival at about 2am.

Bought some. It tastes like #@&%!, and really isn't anything like what they say on the internet. Those freaks sit and meditate after ingesting half a pound, then talk about how it makes them trip. Of course, when everyone else says "it didn't do anything to me, this is B.S.," the proponents say "well some people just aren't affected."

PLEASE.

Anyway, this song is boring, and if anyones' life is so pathetic that all they can sing about is salvia, they don't deserve publishment. Publishicity? whatever. Salvia tastes like ass.

couldn't get into it despite the subject mattter (which i really look forward to trying some day)
When your soul won't go
And your wounds have yet to heal
And your heart is bleeding
And you don't want anymore to feel
And her voice, it still penetrates your soul
And your mind, it still fears the day she left your home

Dreams of Yesterday
Dreams of Yesterday

When your eyes are tearing
And you can't seem to let her memory go
And your days seem endless
Cause the time, it's been passin by so slow
And her voice, you still expect it on the phone
And your mind, it still fears the day she left you alone

Dreams of Yesterday
Dreams of Yesterday

Salvia, won't you take me on home?
Take my mind and my body and my soul
And make them one with you...
Salvia, won't you save my soul?
