Headwater - What is Tractor Jazz....Well to start with its about the best way to describe Headwater's music.

Folk with more edge. Country with less electric guitars and more banjos.

When you weave the strands of this recording together, they knit a nice cozy sweater you can wrap around yourself in front of the fire while you sip your whisky and smoke yourself cross-eyed. I took off a 1/2 star because I'd like to hear a little more cohesive story in the lyrics...this sound draws your attention to the words, and if they're not saying much...neither is your song...but overall, this is pleasant, well-played, produced, and recorded...

Oh maaaan what an EXCELLENT find!
My digging thru the archives is worth all the spiders, dust, snippyness and metal intolerance(lol)
As soon as that banjo kicked in i was hooked.
Solidly written, performed(or is it samples?)and produced.

i like that the banjo is forward in the mix. the accordian is really nice-it's a nice, unexpected bit of european flare. i'm not wild about the lyrics however.

Pleasant. Nice voice. And there's something unusual about the sound, but the lyrics do nothing for me. They're totally predictable. Wonder about this sound with lyrics that don't "fit" so well.

Really nice tune, though may be forgetable unless some up-and-comer uses it in a movie or, better yet, makes a movie based on it. Singalongable. Overall solid playing and judicious use of banjo! Hint of Tom Waits. Great harmonies. Lead vocal needs a little Wasabi.
I can imagine this song live where the folk lovers with a couple beers in em grow happy hearted with melancholy and hum along in some sort of vague recognition that we all are intertwined and have our personal nowheretown stories--even if, like me, they aren't precisely sure what the song is about.

The music here is all great, but I don't care for the words or the melody that's carrying them. I think I'd be more agreeable to the vocals if I liked the words. They don't feel like you put any time care or thought into them. Just like you threw down some lines, made sure they rhymed and had enough syllables then ran right over to the studio.

That accordion on the other hand, so tasty. That's my favorite part of the song. That gets 5 stars on its own. Nice job on the banjo. Nice understated drums and upright bass.

I'd give this a 4.25-ish if the words gave me something to chew on. But they really pull this song way down for me. There's no 2.85 so I'll go with 3.

I like this a lot better on the second listen. The melody isn't that interesting, but that's okay because the lyrics, instrumentation, and confidence make up for it.

hmmm... I wonder if this makes sense?

I don't like it but it's a good song.

Intellectually I understand that this song in particular fills a certain niche however the dreary emotion of the song and again the song itself is just not something I personally enjoy.

I wish I could be more constructive, sorry.

Keep it up though, there are obviously many critics here that enjoy this song.

i think i like the lyrics better than the music. or the other way around. i think i'm confused because they don't seem to match in my head. maybe i've just listened to too much of something. i'm certainly not putting it down per se, it just seems like a culture clash. like wearing a cowboy hat and boots with your kilt. there again, not that there's anything wrong with it! i'll just have to listen a few more times. never been much of a technorati so i'll leave that to those that are. i just keep waiting for tom waits to come in singing, or to hear these lyriics over something really nick cave-ish. this could be the b-side to red right hand or something. but it is what it is. i probably just need to have my operating system reinstalled.

This is crazy, it's so intimate...and it has that "French" sounding accordian...the one you hear in Gigi and any other thing the has old time france in it...and of course some New Orleans in there for the Cajuns...

I like the vocal, very contemporary and the lyrics are intriguing...Can't rate cause you are out of my depth. I just have to sit back and enjoy!

Thanks for posting this...well executed and totally something we don't see much of!

Uh, maybe just a little slow and country for me personally, but nicely done. The accordian work is real nice, almost has an Italian flavor that somehow contrast nicely with this. I love their term "Tractor Jazz"!. The lyrics were good and sung well, but a little to bassy in the mix. A good toe-tapper.

I dug it. I like folky, upbeat music. I couldn't hear it really closely because of the noise around here, but what I could tell, I liked. Insturment choices seemed appropriate and interesting. This is the type of thing that I could listen to while kickin' it in a coffee bar. I don't know how much I could listen to it, but certainly a few times would be enjoyable.

i love the banjo, it's a nice song, i like your voices, i like the harmonies, i think, on this take, that the lyrics don't seem familiar enough to be delivered with flair, if they're going to be deadpan, they still need flair to replace emotion... otherwise they sound like they're being read, which i can relate to, cause sometimes when i record a song just written, i can't remember by own lyrics and i have the paper for reminder... i'll listen more... this is nice it deserves full and honest feedback, if that's why you're hear?

Sorry Guys, as Resident Rock Star Divo, I am NOT allowed to rate or comment on any songs that have banjo & accordian in theme..this has BOTH!!!!!

Otherwise, nice quaint little song though...
This is a studio recording, but all of it, besides the accordian, is done live off the floor, with everyone in the same room. Its the second take, I think.

Lyrics: Headwater, Nowhere Town

I was tied up tight, in my tangled roots
Shedding dusty tears in my alligator boots
And its a shake down baby, so don't think twice
When you hear the motor turn in the dead of the night, sing

Oooooh

Now pack your bags up, pack 'em up good and quick
I got a bottle of medicine that might do the trick
And we're going to the place that we both know well
Three miles out of Memphis, half way to hell

Straight down to Nowhere Town
Bottle on the dashboard, pedal to the ground
Straight down to Nowhere Town
Looking for something that can't be found

Well I've got a bad reputation, I'm a dog on a chain
There's a state wide storm cloud chasing my name
The needle's on empty and I'm down in the dirt
Its been raining so long that the sun's gonna hurt, now

Ooooh

Now pack your bags up, pack 'em up good and quick
I got a bottle of medicine that might do the trick
And we're going to the place that we both know well
Three miles out of Memphis, half way to hell

Straight down to Nowhere Town
Bottle on the dashboard, pedal to the ground
Straight down to Nowhere Town
Looking for something that can't be found
