This is all written by a fan (Vickie). I have blanket permission to place Happy's music anywhere I want. She hates self-promotion and just wants her music to be heard. She's not trying to "make it" or whatever such ambitions are expected of a female singer-songwriter-musician who makes music because it's what she loves to do.

She lives on a farm in upstate New York and finally released her 11th album, and her first since 1998's Many Worlds Are Born Tonight, called Find Me (now on CD Baby and iTunes).

Happy Rhodes started making music when she was 11, when her mother gave her a guitar to play with. She started writing music soon after, and had become an accomplished songwriter by the time she was 14.

At 17 she began working as an apprentice engineer at a recording studio. The studio's owner heard her voice and songs and gave her free time to record everything she'd written up to that point. He introduced her to Kevin Bartlett, who owned Aural Gratification, a small, cassette-only label to release his own albums. He persuaded her to gather up all the individual songs and release them on his label. They found that she had enough for 3 albums (which became Rhodes I, Rhodes II, and Rearmament) and soon after came a 4th, Ecto. The "1st4" were released on hand-dubbed cassettes for several years before they were re-released on CD in 1992.

In 1991 Happy released Warpaint, her first album conceived and recorded as an album, and the first to be released on CD. Warpaint was followed by Equipoise, RhodeSongs (a compilation of earlier songs, plus some rarities and a cover of Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes"), Building The Colossus and The Keep, a beautiful compilation of acoustic versions and more rarities).

In 1997 Happy recorded the lush and science-fiction tinged Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. It was recorded mostly at home with the vocals recorded in her bathroom. She and Aural Gratificaton parted ways and Happy signed with a new label called Samson Music. They provided the artwork, a wide release, a small amount of promotion and a few live showcases for Many Worlds, then dropped her because they didn't know how to market her music and realized that she didn't fit in with their vision of the label's future.

On her own now, Happy released her 11th album, Find Me, funded by day jobs and self-released. She and her husband, musician Bob Muller, are building a home studio so that Happy will have an easier time of making music in the future.

Some musicians might be connected to Happy and not even know it. Her "day job" is hand-assembling high-end equipment for Dangerous Music.

It's my desire to share her music with as many people and in as many ways as possible. Thank you for listening.

- Vickie

Favourite so far,and I have been and sometimes am the person who won't talk...words that go somewhere specific will always mean more to me than words written to simply fill a gap in a song.

One of my favorite songs of hers. I do have to agree about that line in the chorus, though. It's a cringer in what is otherwise a well-crafted lyric. I'm not sure why there's such a negative reaction by some. Certainly the music doesn't fit into the mainstream radio mold, but to me that's refreshing.

It's really good, but suffers from the Kate Bush likeness. If there had been no Kate Bush, you'd be getting some serious stars here. A little Cocteau Twiny and Annie Lennoxy. Nice recording and vocal. Same thought from me as before: The song structure is solid, but the music is a little too safe. And what a #@&%!in voice!!
In my admittedly half-assed scan I felt like these were generally solid lyrics with the exception of 'or maybe walking toast' --one of those lines that cringes me like 'seems that the wrath of the gods got a punch in the nose' 3.74 stars.

i find the tempo too slow for this melody. i think her voice is great, as usual, and i like the lyrics. i downloaded it, and sped up the tempo, i like it better sped up 25%... after speeding it up, when i came back to it at original speed, i liked it better than first listen, but still think it's too slow, it loses some of its powers of engagement/or the ability to connect and maintain interest, i think, at this tempo...

(This is on the album Warpaint. It's about the frustration of people who Just Won't Talk)

Words Weren't Made For Cowards

I am transparent
An open book
There's no choice in the matter
But the breath from my mind
Is living air
And the notes from my heart
Are what I share

Words weren't made for cowards
There's not much to hide behind
We can see for a mile
Without our eyes
I can see through a smile
To any lie

Must I pry your lips apart?
And look for thoughts
Look for thoughts
Beneath your tongue

So you think nothing said
Is nothing lost?
Well, I would buy every line
At any cost

Do I have to dig?
Do I have to prod?
Reach into your chest
And pull your feelings out?

Are you dancing dead?
Or maybe walking toast?
If you feel anything
Be brave
Come forth
Let it show

Tell me what d'you think of life?
Tell me do you think at all?
Never fear
There's a place
Where you are safe
Where you don't have to be real
Or have a face

My time's too short to waste on
Things you say without your brain
Will you paint works of art
When you speak?
When you open your mouth
Will I weep?

Do I have to dig?
Do I have to prod?
Reach into your chest
And pull your feelings out?

Are you dancing dead?
Or maybe walking toast?
If you feel anything
Be brave
Come forth
Let it show

I will watch you like a hawk
Wait for you to make a slip
Think it's easy to fake what you know?
You'll never fool anyone
With your little show

You are transparent regardless of
All the efforts made
Efforts made to mask your face
You reveal everything in a phrase
You conceal what your mouth betrays

Do I have to dig?
Do I have to prod?
Reach into your chest
And pull your feelings out?

Are you dancing dead?
Maybe walking toast?
If you feel anything
Be brave
Come forth
Let it show

Do I have to dig?
Do I have to prod?
Reach into your chest
And pull your feelings out?

Are you dancing dead?
Maybe walking toast?
If you feel anything
Be brave
Come forth
Let it show
