Happy Rhodes - FYI, all 11 of Happy's albums are now on YouTube.

Plus, all of Happy's albums can be heard free via streaming audio at:

Full-length concerts can be seen on her MySpace page (click View My...Videos under her picture):

This is all written by a fan (Vickie). I have blanket permission to place Happy's music anywhere I want. She hates self-promotion and just wants her music to be heard. She's not trying to "make it" or whatever such ambitions are expected of a female singer-songwriter-musician who makes music because it's what she loves to do.

She lives on a farm in upstate New York and finally released her 11th album, and her first since 1998's Many Worlds Are Born Tonight, called Find Me (now on CD Baby and iTunes).

Happy Rhodes started making music when she was 11, when her mother gave her a guitar to play with. She started writing music soon after, and had become an accomplished songwriter by the time she was 14.

At 17 she began working as an apprentice engineer at a recording studio. The studio's owner heard her voice and songs and gave her free time to record everything she'd written up to that point. He introduced her to Kevin Bartlett, who owned Aural Gratification, a small, cassette-only label to release his own albums. He persuaded her to gather up all the individual songs and release them on his label. They found that she had enough for 3 albums (which became Rhodes I, Rhodes II, and Rearmament) and soon after came a 4th, Ecto. The "1st4" were released on hand-dubbed cassettes for several years before they were re-released on CD in 1992.

In 1991 Happy released Warpaint, her first album conceived and recorded as an album, and the first to be released on CD. Warpaint was followed by Equipoise, RhodeSongs (a compilation of earlier songs, plus some rarities and a cover of Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes"), Building The Colossus and The Keep, a beautiful compilation of acoustic versions and more rarities).

In 1997 Happy recorded the lush and science-fiction tinged Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. It was recorded mostly at home with the vocals recorded in her bathroom. She and Aural Gratificaton parted ways and Happy signed with a new label called Samson Music. They provided the artwork, a wide release, a small amount of promotion and a few live showcases for Many Worlds, then dropped her because they didn't know how to market her music and realized that she didn't fit in with their vision of the label's future.

On her own now, Happy released her 11th album, Find Me, funded by day jobs and self-released. She and her husband, musician Bob Muller, are building a home studio so that Happy will have an easier time of making music in the future.

Some musicians might be connected to Happy and not even know it. Her "day job" is hand-assembling high-end equipment for Dangerous Music.

It's my desire to share her music with as many people and in as many ways as possible. Thank you for listening.

- Vickie

Yeah, she had a horrid childhood, very nasty and sad. The monsters were her friends. Imagine a little kid who would dream up monsters to go kill her tormenters. That's Happy.

I forgot the link to the song

I doubt I'd post any of her early stuff, but it's all interesting for delvers. Her darkest songs have such beautiful vocals.

The next song in the queue is about a sentient computer that's been abandoned.

I forget, you guys don't know about early, creepy lyrics, Happy. 80% of her lyrics are about things like death, murder, suicide, possession, vampires, stalking, aliens, monsters, abused kids and fun things like that. She had a very #@&%!ed-up childhood, and it ALL came out in her music. She's all better now. (Well, judging by the songs on her most recent unreleased album, maybe not)

Here's one for you singmetofire:

Asylum Master

Oh silent moving chill, it's looking bleak
You're not mine to touch and I dare not speak
I need your presence be you dead or alive
My misery demands your company to survive

The living, breathing corpse
Whose shadow rightly before me walks

Only in your eyes lies your soul
And only in your arms am I whole
So damn your father for loving your mother
I curse him, for now I want no other

The living, breathing corpse
Whose shadow rightly before me walks

Master of the round walls, still my heart
It only makes my dreams fall apart
Trap me in your courtyard of broken stone
Oh it's cold and grey but I'll not be alone

The living, breathing corpse
Whose shadow rightly before me walks

Bon and Han are great, musically and as people. They did a mini-tour with Happy in 2003, playing small venues and living room concerts. We saw 3 of the shows. We don't have any video of any of the shows up at YouTube, but, in case you didn't see it, here's Bon with Happy in 1999:

Many Worlds Are Born Tonight is her most experimental album. That was 8 years ago. The one after that, Find Me (unreleased) is, at least the tracks I've heard, fairly sedate. She said in a recent interview that she wants to get "" for the next album. Oh joy!

As always the voice is great. Certainly talented. Very polished. Well produced. But this piece goes on too long. Don't like the chorus repeated. Actually the chorus isn't that strong. Don't like the merry-go-round keyboard at the beginning. Some cool things like putting in choral backround at 3ish and the instrumental bit at the ending.
But frankly I have no attention span for this--I am not part of the 'slow movement'. Me and mine are a video generation. Soundbites and flash clips and multitasking. This works on the new age folks who have the patience for a weekend yoga retreat.

Wake up sedrite, the song is over.
This is from Many Worlds Are Born Tonight.

I see you because you are tragic
And I need you for the same
There's a little bit of you in me
You can't escape what you became

You have the look of ill fate about you
You and all your brothers too
And I reach out as if I contain the antidote
But of course I don't

Although we share pain and despair
Somehow you are predisposed to
Suffer the most

I see you because you are tragic
I'll look for you in the rain

[lyrics uncertain here]

The roots you wanted to grow
Will never take you know
Cause this is all just an exercise
And you're not alone

I see you because you're so tragic
And I need you for the same
There's a little bit of you in me
I'll look for you in the rain
