Pauline Trouble - no real band...just me and my guitar(s), and sometimes a tamborine, casio, or a box...any real "live" drumming is someone else and from a long, long time ago...

Thank you so much for checking out the lyrics! That is one thing that I always want to hear about, but seldom do...It's been a lifetime since writing workshops, and most folks on this site don't seem to mention "the words" at all...I write my lyrics in a more conversational tone than my short stories and fiction, etc, where I use more concrete imagery, and concentrate more on the consonance and assonance and lyricism of the lines...I would like to merge the writing styles more in my songs, and in time, hopefully, I'll get there. Thanks for taking the time, man...

reading back, it sounds dryer than i want it to. because i'm not saying that you didn't execute this song well. the two are completely separate(wanting to hear it with a band...) your energy is right on, and that's all that really counts to me.

I'm really interested in hearing songs performed well. I also like the idea that anyone who has a miind to should play, record, et al. First off I think the song is good. the lyrics are strong, regarding your comments for critique on that end. with this song surely it's only a matter of opinion beyond what you've already put together for this song. that being said I'd love to hear your songs realized with a really rockin band.

Ok ... The song has a nice feel, but sounds like a lesser Dylan ripoff

Thank you very much, ya'll--Goingtothepoolhouse, that Hallowed Ground album WAS hallowed to me--that, and the first...cool to know that a lot of it worked its way into me, to show its influence, completely unbidden, so many years later! That's wild! I'm glad that is there still...Thank ya kindley for the stars and comments!

don't mind me, just checking out the PT i've missed before I get to far behind. is this a new "one" -- okay, while i'm downloading, let me just say this is a great song, like, a lost song of the femmes hallowed ground album, which i know everyone has already compared this too. "Maybe all I'll ever have is right now" great hook.. great lyrics all around. wow! seriously cool that you are so good. this is perfect. I'm gonna lay down some stars here, and just to be clear, i mean 'em.

Why, thanks bunches, reptile!

Has anyone read the lyrics? I am conflicted about them--That first verse (the one I left out here) was the one I wasn't too crazy about, but it does give the song more coherence, doesn't it? Lets the listener know what the other stuff refers to? Or does it need a bit of an intro? I was overly anxious to record something with my new tamborine and this is quite different from most other recordings of the song...I'd love some feedback on the lyrics, if anyone wants to throw their opinion out there.

I miss the ballsier vocal of your last performance, but do love the eerie western feel of the performance in this. Well put together and pretty cool perfromance. You've still got more balls than most female singers out there. Actually you still got more balls than most male singers out there. It's a sound that shall keep me coming back for more.

Good, Zissou, good! I wasn't going for it, but early on I realized it had that Femmes feel to it, so I let it be what it wanted to be. Sometimes songs seem to have a life and identity of their own, and you have to let them be themselves. Like children...I had loved the 1st two VF's albums exceedingly when I was in college, so I'm sure some got into my system.

ha ha, yes I can see what you mean Pauline, I bet you're like me, in the fact that you can hear something worth listening to in Samoan chants or even something worth borrowing.

One of my fav quotes is from max cavalera from Sepultura- who said we're influenced by everything from classical to bossa nova, but you wont hear a lick in our songs.

I wondered why Angelina didn't come home last night.

No problem with any of that Pauline - I wondered why they were that way and if it was deliberate, that's all. If deliberate then I'd say change it, if not then that's OK. There are plenty of worse things in my stuff - I'm an enthusiastic but rather lousy amateur with the timing of a cheap wrist watch and all the technique of a one legged badger. So I'm hardly one to criticise in that respect.

I like the song in it's own right - and the neat little hook especially - and I like your attitude towards music as it's much like my own. I don't want to take it too seriously, either.

Keep 'em coming ;-)

Unk, I believe the answer to the question about my indluences would have to be,"A lot of both." I have some beautiful older music, some Deep Purple covers from Stormbringer, etc...'cause I'm "older" and lived through the best of the late 60's/70's rock--Then came college and a whole slew of new punk and garage influences...then Pearl Jam and Nirvana, Hole...Like anyone else, I left what I didn't like (You won't ever hear me do Van Halen's Jump!, that's for sure...haha!) and I took a bit from here and there...not conciously, of course.

Firth, I know the backing vocals go off the road a bit...not sure why I didn't keep them, but to me, this is all mostly for fun...Besides, Angelina Jolie only has but so much time to record in her busy days...(Put that gun down, Maddox! I told you never to aim at your siblings or adopted siblings!!!) haha. I guess I don't want to take this too seriously...A second take of the backing vocals would have been in order, but also would have made me feel that this is "serious." Which I don't ever want it to become. When an artist or band wants to buy a song, I'd be willing to put in the extra effort...It's weird you should say I sound "country," as country radio wouldn't touch this stuff with a ten gallon hat! I was trying to write country ('cause most "artists" don't write their own songs(!!!) in that market, so I'd been TRYING to write something that someone would pay me for for about three years...Much of it I can't stand to hear anymore. There's a huge difference in writing for one's self and writing to sell to a market you can't really stand! But here, I thought I'd just made music that expressed how I was "feeling." Not to please anyone else...Looks like I may have succeeded. (LOL)

Thanks, guys! This is the most Violent Femmes-like of my stuff. I have recordings where I didn't leave off the first verse, better recordings where there's no backing vocals, no percussion, and they have a certain spirit, but none seems to capture the real spirit of the song like this does. I had just gotten the tamborine, and wanted to put something down with it immediately...Didn't even get the lyrics out. Didn't care. But I think both Gano and Courtney Love were channaling through me...This recording of the song "grew" on me as time passed...One thing I'd change, if I did it again, would be the screwed-up timing--I would also try not to sound like I 'm swallowing my tongue near the end. Was gonna take that off the recording, but couldn't quite do it yet. I'll not tell you what it's about; either the song accomplishes that or it doesn't. You are welcome to look at the left-off first verse as well as the rest of the words in the liner notes...

It's a good song with a good hook and some nice melodies and backing vocals, but some of the bits didn't quite work. There was a point in the middle of the song where I wasn't sure if it was a slight stumble or a deliberate skip. If it was a stumble, fair enough. If it was deliberate I'd rethink that idea. Now that I can hear your voice more clearly it doesn't sound the least bit like Patti Smith - sounds more country if anything. But I'm English and most female American singers sound country to me ;-)

gawd I love you,- seriously, were you influence by a lot of punk and grunge, or did you happen to just have similar influences to those artists. Great delivery, I think this shows a gamut of emotions. AWESOME job. Can I come over and hear your tapes?
I left the first verse out on this spur of-the-moment recording, maybe because I sub-conciously don't think they're that strong--I'll include them so ya'll can give me feedback--And yeah, I know I nearly swallow my tongue during one part, but boy, was that theraputic! I have other, cleaner recordings of this, but none capture the abandon here--

lyrics- (Well they raise 'em up and they raise 'em tall/Grow 'em up in Arkansas/Among shuckin' machinery--They raise 'em up, but they put 'em down/The kids escape away to town/To live a life of debauchery--Yeah) (Not on this version)

Chorus: Singin' hey, ho/ my soul's up for grabs/Swing me down low/Maybe all I'll ever have is right now/yeah, right now--

Life ain't got no guarantees/You can't be what you wanted to be/And the person that you'll love loves someone else--You can kick the dirt/Yopu can kick the ground/But there is just no way around/You'll settle for a whole lot less--Yes--(repeat chorus)--

Help me father, I'm on my knees/Help me mother, oh, help me, please/to stand up on my own two feet and sing/Give me patience, give me hope, give me enough length of rope/To hang myself in luxury--Yeah--(Repeat chorus)
( Maybe all I'll ever have is right now.)
