Happy Rhodes - FYI, all 11 of Happy's albums are now on YouTube.

Plus, all of Happy's albums can be heard free via streaming audio at:

Full-length concerts can be seen on her MySpace page (click View My...Videos under her picture):

This is all written by a fan (Vickie). I have blanket permission to place Happy's music anywhere I want. She hates self-promotion and just wants her music to be heard. She's not trying to "make it" or whatever such ambitions are expected of a female singer-songwriter-musician who makes music because it's what she loves to do.

She lives on a farm in upstate New York and finally released her 11th album, and her first since 1998's Many Worlds Are Born Tonight, called Find Me (now on CD Baby and iTunes).

Happy Rhodes started making music when she was 11, when her mother gave her a guitar to play with. She started writing music soon after, and had become an accomplished songwriter by the time she was 14.

At 17 she began working as an apprentice engineer at a recording studio. The studio's owner heard her voice and songs and gave her free time to record everything she'd written up to that point. He introduced her to Kevin Bartlett, who owned Aural Gratification, a small, cassette-only label to release his own albums. He persuaded her to gather up all the individual songs and release them on his label. They found that she had enough for 3 albums (which became Rhodes I, Rhodes II, and Rearmament) and soon after came a 4th, Ecto. The "1st4" were released on hand-dubbed cassettes for several years before they were re-released on CD in 1992.

In 1991 Happy released Warpaint, her first album conceived and recorded as an album, and the first to be released on CD. Warpaint was followed by Equipoise, RhodeSongs (a compilation of earlier songs, plus some rarities and a cover of Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes"), Building The Colossus and The Keep, a beautiful compilation of acoustic versions and more rarities).

In 1997 Happy recorded the lush and science-fiction tinged Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. It was recorded mostly at home with the vocals recorded in her bathroom. She and Aural Gratificaton parted ways and Happy signed with a new label called Samson Music. They provided the artwork, a wide release, a small amount of promotion and a few live showcases for Many Worlds, then dropped her because they didn't know how to market her music and realized that she didn't fit in with their vision of the label's future.

On her own now, Happy released her 11th album, Find Me, funded by day jobs and self-released. She and her husband, musician Bob Muller, are building a home studio so that Happy will have an easier time of making music in the future.

Some musicians might be connected to Happy and not even know it. Her "day job" is hand-assembling high-end equipment for Dangerous Music.

It's my desire to share her music with as many people and in as many ways as possible. Thank you for listening.

- Vickie

I understand Trey Gunn is a Happy fan. Maybe Happy can be the opening act when King Crimson goes on tour next year. Now that would be a concert!!

It has been a long wait for this new Happy Rhodes album. It is ridiculously good. It is amazing that all the voices you hear belong to the same woman. This song is awesome too.

I'm not as big of a fan of the low voices on the verses, sorry, but you're still great, what a intense song.

Charles Crumb and Robert Crumb were great at 2 dimensional charactors. And Happy is very much a multidimensional artist! I love this song.

Always good to hear a new Happy tune
Charlie is from Happy's new album Find Me. It was inspired by Robert Crumb's brother Charles, written after Happy saw the documentary Crumb. As usual, all of the voices are Happy.

I could have been Charlie
I could have been dead
Could have been hopeless
Put a hole in my head

There's a fine line between us
Charlie and me
(Background: Living on meds)
Soon to be forgotten
Or remembered as a freak

(Background: His was a madness I identify with)

I don't know who's scarier
Him or me
(Background: Charlie is dead)
He's already gone there
I'm on the same family tree

'Cause Charlie had potential
Just like me and you
Something in him misfired
It could happen to me too

(Background: His was a madness I identify with)
(Background: His was a madness I identify with)

I can see Charlie
Sitting on his hands
Drowning in his chaos
And formulating plans

If I had stayed that way
(Background: I could have been Charlie)
It would have been me
(Background: Living on meds)
Wishing for a handgun
Or a rope on a sturdy tree

When I wake up
(Background: Charlie had potential)
I'm just like him
He's got madness I can get with
There is a beauty
in succumbing to fear
You get comfortable
in your limbo
I know
