this is a great day for eclecticism on redfizz. so much for the people who claim that the only thing that gets featured around here is indie folk. congrats on the feature kingster.

Actually what I would really like would be for Vinnie Colaiuta to play these songs with Gary. It's not that Mike did not play well...he did....he played great but these songs are right up Vinnie's alley......check out the new Jeff Beck DVD (Live this week from Ronnie Scott's) and you will understand what I mean. Gary deserves to play with musicians of that caliber! Tal on bass too!

I have had a few days away from my drums due to a major family event (a joyous one). So this afternoon I went to the drum room and put on Gary's CD to play along. Awesome stuff. I usually try to get back into "band mode" by warming up with some Steely Dan (Aja or Royal Scam.. great drum albums) or maybe Al Dimeola's old rock/fusion music. I have to tell you that these songs are demanding from a drummer's perspective. I also know the tunes fairly well but I cannot just play them once in a while to really stay on top of them. I know that tomorrow I will be just a bit better for having tried to play through all Gary's tunes today.
Thanks for the challenge and the songs are sooooo cool.

Heh, I'm the same, pilfered from all and incorporated into my own playing, have you heard Odd Flow on here (Jamsmith mentioned them below?) Some great fretwork going on there!
As the self appointed guitarded member of Red Fizz I am looking forward to more of your work (I've already Dled your early stuff when I first got here)

I had the pleasure of playing with Gary for a short time when he was putting a live act together to play this cool music on the scene in Cincinnati. So, I already know this tune from working it up. And I gave it "5 stars" a long time ago!
Very cool, Gary! I'll be looking for more of your tunes up here.

Thanks all. I'm glad to be able to put a spotlight on this genre of music here. As usual, most comments are well thoughtout and I will take your opinions into account when writing/recording future music. I agree with some that MIDI instruments are a compromise, and although there are some great fusion players coming out of the Cleveland area, they are either busy with their own projects, or they have literally COME OUT OF CLEVELAND and gone elsewhere. I have collaborated long-distance with several musicians including Mad Mike on drums (not this song) and will likely do so in the future. Much of what sounds like MIDI is MIDI, but is done with a GR-33 guitar synth on a PRS Artist guitar. And for Richie, you don't have to steal my licks, you can just borrow them, as I have from every guitar player I could. I would love to hear more fusion music on this site in the future. Peace, gsk

In a recent Guitar Player interview, Joe Bonomasso said he took extensive lessons from Danny Gatton. Perhaps it was his modesty that elicited that response. Dude was certainly a monster. He could even play country and blow you away.

Santana meets Brand X - as I like both I like this. Knocking off half a star 'cos it goes on a bit too long and another half 'cos it faded when it should have ended.

yeah...record store and head shop. I worked there for many years. Great place to shop. Sadly they are long gone (as are many of the old style music stores) WHFS was a great station as was WGTB out of Georgetown University.

I live in Harpers Ferry now, but was in the DC area before. Gatton was a real treasure, saw him play a few times. Michael is an old friend...great guy and an incredible player. Did you ever shop at Penguin Feather?

Hey Babar,
I was in DC for 25 years and used to catch Gatton when he was playing in the smaller DC area clubs in the 70's. He was really helpful, mostly with blues related stuff, and was really shy. When I first asked him to share some of what he knew, he said "I don't know anything". Perhaps because he was an ear player. I saw Michael Fath several times but didn't know him personally, but he's was always outstanding - a natural. Both those guys were the best. You should google Jorge Strunz if you are interested in DC guitarists. He's truly in the league with DImeola. Are you also from that area?

Hey Sputnikov,
You're close - This song was sampled at a rate I originally considered unacceptable for submission which is why I didn't submit it earlier. Having a 6Meg max with Redfizz I could either submit half the song, not submit it at all, or 'takes my chances' with a lower sample rate that results in a song less than 6 Meg. I've petitioned Redfizz before to raise their max song size to at least 10 Mbps. Check www.myspace.com/garystuartking to listen to a 256kbps version of all my stuff (Or buy the CD through CDBaby for the real thing @ 44.1Mbps). Good catch though. Tx, GSK

Great playing, but i know for a fact that you can get drum machines that don't sound that robotic. It just really stands out for me, and makes it hard to listen to this for all that it is.

Playing is great though, really do think the time signatures are spot on also.
Neat stuff here, just lose that drum machine.

I am digging this. Coolest thing I have heard hear since OddFlow. Strange how I rarely review anything and today I click on Backstage and this hits me first. Original, but reminds a bit of Phi Keaggy (and that's not a bad thing!)

I must say I don't like the synth line at all. They are more distracting heard next to such sublime guitar work. Here is my suggestion, instead of those awful synth lines, next time just play the melody lines on the guitar double-tracked with some effect. That would sound much better to my ears. Its the synth lead lines I refer to the background tracks sound fine to me.
