Happy Rhodes - FYI, all 11 of Happy's albums are now on YouTube.

Plus, all of Happy's albums can be heard free via streaming audio at:

Full-length concerts can be seen on her MySpace page (click View My...Videos under her picture):

This is all written by a fan (Vickie). I have blanket permission to place Happy's music anywhere I want. She hates self-promotion and just wants her music to be heard. She's not trying to "make it" or whatever such ambitions are expected of a female singer-songwriter-musician who makes music because it's what she loves to do.

She lives on a farm in upstate New York and finally released her 11th album, and her first since 1998's Many Worlds Are Born Tonight, called Find Me (now on CD Baby and iTunes).

Happy Rhodes started making music when she was 11, when her mother gave her a guitar to play with. She started writing music soon after, and had become an accomplished songwriter by the time she was 14.

At 17 she began working as an apprentice engineer at a recording studio. The studio's owner heard her voice and songs and gave her free time to record everything she'd written up to that point. He introduced her to Kevin Bartlett, who owned Aural Gratification, a small, cassette-only label to release his own albums. He persuaded her to gather up all the individual songs and release them on his label. They found that she had enough for 3 albums (which became Rhodes I, Rhodes II, and Rearmament) and soon after came a 4th, Ecto. The "1st4" were released on hand-dubbed cassettes for several years before they were re-released on CD in 1992.

In 1991 Happy released Warpaint, her first album conceived and recorded as an album, and the first to be released on CD. Warpaint was followed by Equipoise, RhodeSongs (a compilation of earlier songs, plus some rarities and a cover of Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes"), Building The Colossus and The Keep, a beautiful compilation of acoustic versions and more rarities).

In 1997 Happy recorded the lush and science-fiction tinged Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. It was recorded mostly at home with the vocals recorded in her bathroom. She and Aural Gratificaton parted ways and Happy signed with a new label called Samson Music. They provided the artwork, a wide release, a small amount of promotion and a few live showcases for Many Worlds, then dropped her because they didn't know how to market her music and realized that she didn't fit in with their vision of the label's future.

On her own now, Happy released her 11th album, Find Me, funded by day jobs and self-released. She and her husband, musician Bob Muller, are building a home studio so that Happy will have an easier time of making music in the future.

Some musicians might be connected to Happy and not even know it. Her "day job" is hand-assembling high-end equipment for Dangerous Music.

It's my desire to share her music with as many people and in as many ways as possible. Thank you for listening.

- Vickie

Thanks, Vickie, good to hear she's still around in Musicland. Her voice is impressive. I only wish it would walk in a different musical landscape, for the production is too arti or synthesized for my taste. From the newer songs I like 'Here and Hereafter' a lot, It sounds quite classic or timeless to me.
This here old song, I Say, is to me dangerously on the edge of kitsch, with all respect, something I would love as the endsong of a movie soundtrack.

The "Dale Vernon of Goth" comment is quite funny. Naughty Uncle-bad touch.

Ruud, Happy's last album was released about a year and a half ago. I submitted these songs to RedFizz: One And Many, Charlie and She Won't Go. Other songs can be heard at (the main Happy Rhodes page is the same but without the findme at the end).

Thanks for the feature. So awesome!

I have a question: Are there any new recordings of Happy Rhodes?
This obviously originates from a time close to the 80s, the sounds and melodies are very similar to the ones Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel made back then. It would be interesting to hear what she sounds like nowadays.

I Say

As I walk through the streets
I could be anyone that you need
But I must stand and speak my name
Or be forced to live up to your dreams
I say

I like the wind and rain
I don't wear red, I dream
I pull the bugs from death
I read my books in bed

For I believe of all
My lives, this is one
I must define

Not you, or her can say who I am
Not them, or him can say who I am
Not them, or her will say who I am
Not you, or him can tell me who I am

You see my face is unveiled to the world
You see my face is unveiled to the world

If people speak in my stead
Do not trust everything that is said
When my thoughts come from me
You will know that it can be believed
I say

I like to paint the strange
My hair is blonde, eyes grey
I hate to be in crowds
I often think out loud

For I believe of all
My lives, this is one
I must define

Not you, or her can say who I am
Not them, or him can say who I am
Not them, or her will say who I am
Not you, or him can tell me who I am

You see my face is unveiled to the world
You see my face is unveiled to the world

Not you, or her can say who I am
Not them, or him can say who I am
Not them, or her will say who I am
Not you, or him can tell me who I am

You see my face is unveiled to the world
You see my face is unveiled to the world
