I've got a project mgr that makes that joke at least once a week about dummy terminals...At times I yearn for the days of as400s and error messages that actually make sense. Who cares if outlook lost your personal stationary and your graphic behind your signature!!! It's going to get worse too.
The cloud has some lofty ideas. There are a few music collab sites with supposedly minimal latency. I can't get into it yet however.

Funny thing about "cloud computing" - the concept of an essentially dumb terminal connected to a server where the data and program code actually reside - may seem a revolutionary concept to technophiles. Unfortunately, it is nothing new. My dad was dong "cloud computing" when he brought home the briefcase with the teletype machine and acoustic modem and worked on the mainframe from home! Back in the 1960s!

Not as much as I thought. Sometime I think analog. Your ATR is sending 16 indivudual tracks. In digital, the tracks are mixed to a single stereo stream so you don't have 16 channel being sent you, just 2. I would think that UDP for continuous controllers and TCP for the audio stream, an resonable bandwith would work if you got used to the lag. When you turn the fader, the control signal has to be sent back the server, process and the audio returned to you means some what of delay.

i MUST say it's hard to imagine too many musicians using virtualization, although I've seen a nice SAN in a studio recently so I guess it could go really high tech. Cloud composing and engineering....hmm.

Back in the late 70's a band called Rascal Reporters did an album sending 8-track open reel tape around the world to friends so they could add parts to tunes. What a cumbersome project that must have been. Great album.
I am not quite a weenie but more of somewhere between a Vienna sausage and a kielbasa.

a lot of the proprietary stuff is just junk really, and they know it... standardization would be good and a lot of the open source strives for that stuff but the fancy formats keeps desktop weenies addicted to their various platforms. I still don't think that its that hard to work around, unless you're talking about huge projects. Still a header file thingie is pretty neat
jamsmith
[1/4/2010 10:46:19 PM EST]
No, I am not calling for a standardization of feature, just the project file format.
Your project file hold audio data and instructions/setting data. A standard file header would include the audio data type (wav, aiff, etc) the resolution (16, 24, 32 bit, etc), and the sample rate (44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz, etc). It would include were each audio track file begins and ends. I would contain the software and version it was created on and point to where the proprietary data sits. That way when you open a project file, if it is not compatible with the program it was created on, it could at least unpack all the audio files. Frankly, the editing file pointers for editing could also be standardized. The more of the purely mechanics that could be standardize the better. So all EQ settings could have number of bands with the filter type, Q, amplitude, and center frequency. Of course each EQ may not sound the same, but at least if you both use the same plugins, they will. In fact, despite the funny name given, there are a finite number of actual FX and parameters. The differences are how they are implemented.
I always bring up MIDI when discussing computers because MIDI is the very best electronics standard ever created. 100% accepted and 100% compatible. If the vendor want proprietary data stored, you use system exclusive messages. MIDI has not stopped sequencer software and sound module hardware from being very innovative. MIDI is proof that standards can be used. This has been successful for nearly 30 years.

that's true, one of the things I like about messing with different platforms is the fact that you can mess with different ideas musically in ways you may not have thought of ...fruityloops and reason allow me to mess with music in ways I hadn't ever considered
CoolFog
[1/4/2010 9:13:05 PM EST]
Reason is a part of your sound just the way Audition is part of my sound. When you use two or three programs it adds to the flavour of your music. Just like bands use different types of guitars and keyboards and mics. I bet your worldwide colaboration will be awesome because of the variety.

Babar Klunj

You are certainly right there. MEZ or Groon Lake wouldn't be able to do what they do if not for computers and the Internet. My favorite software for composing is Reason...made in Sweden. They are constantly asking users what can we do to make this tool work better for you. Many of us use the currently available tools to make make our music and invariably we all say..."Boy..if it could only do this or that". 25 years ago when I was bouncing tracks between 2 tape decks I never dreamed I would have such incredible tools for making music at my disposal as I do today. Though I am very happy with what I have today, I can't wait to see what the software and hardware folks come up with next.

In reality I think having computers and being able to transfer wav files by email makes recording a thousand times easier then it was 20 years ago. But people are like that never satisfied or able to see what they have already and unable to believe they have the creativity to use what they have in new or original ways. People are an ever hungry machine saying "more more better better" It is an unreality that sometimes destroys before reality sets in. In this way I respect Europeans more they tend to be more humble and have a more basic understanding.
Babar Klunj
[1/4/2010 7:53:14 PM EST]
Take Groon Lake for instance. There are 8-10 folks around the world involved each using different types of software. As individual artists each member creates very different styles of music on various platforms, but together we work as one. Being able to send a raw data file that could be used easily by all would be a real bonus.
Babar Klunj
[1/4/2010 7:39:05 PM EST]
The programs would still stay the same. There would just be a way to take the raw data and send it so the next person could input it into the software they use.
CoolFog
[1/4/2010 7:32:07 PM EST]
I am not for it because in the end I think we would loose the variety of programs we have now each with their own features which make them amazing for different styles of music.
Babar Klunj
[1/4/2010 7:15:36 PM EST]
I'm all for a cross platform/software standard. I could then ship raw files to my music buddies all over the world who happen to use different software.
CoolFog
[1/4/2010 7:12:00 PM EST]
I am in favour of many different types of software and a variety of standards. Better for the consumer and it let's your average joe do some cool stuff. If you are at the level to hire a studio to record you good but for the rest of us variety is the spice of life.
jamsmith
[1/4/2010 5:04:22 PM EST]
Well, we have lots of project files for each of the 11 songs meaning about 50 projects and about 12 tracks per projects. I would be all day long importing those wav files back in. Plus, a projejct file is similar to a zip file. Obviously the files the holding all of the data for features not in the ealier versions would do no good, but the ablilty to unlock the PCM files themselves should be available for any version. Plus, the guy is not a buddy, just a hired room and all of the files are on my hard-drive. I will have the Cubase 5 in a couple of days anyhow so the original issue is moot.
But we can still bitch about!
And if we could possibly get musicians united, we might force a file standard that allows portablity of at least the raw tracks between all systems regardess of mfr. Think of it this way. The track that held all your SSL automation signals on your 2" machine may have been useless when you moved to another studio, but that tape would play back on any 2" machine. I don't think I am asking too much from the industry that WE have made rich.
CoolFog
[1/3/2010 10:24:33 PM EST]
I am not a cubase user but I don't think Cubase lied what they mean is you can take older projects and open them in the new version of the software and the reverse.
Most of the new software has the ability to rip into the project file or folder which may include wavs, and on top of that to save the project in any number of forms.
My Audition can save into numerous forms there is actually a long list!
If your buddy at the studio still has your projects it should take all of 5 min to pop the project open and render it to Aiff, wav, mp3 or whatever and email it to you.

jamsmith
[1/3/2010 10:00:57 PM EST]
I am not saying the software is not worth the price, I just think that projects on later version should at least allow the user to extract the wav files.
Turns my daughter's student ID can get me Cubase Essentials 5 for $79 so I will likely just go with that.

eh, good luck on that one, I've had the best luck with mini nova but they went legit, but I use torrentz.com to see what's out there, it's a search engine per say. Normally others will comment to let you know if the files are compromised, but you should be able to burn to disc and then see if there are any infected files. Knock on wood, I've had great luck.
Demonoid seems to be the only one that's working for pulling up files....

I don't want to be a software pirate, but after spending money to get a system with Cubase LE 4, then spending more money in a Cubase 5 studio, I cannot get my files open with spending $400 on Cubase 5. They could at least provide or sell a utility to do as much!
All I want to do get my files open to edit without spending more money. I tried torrents all I get is viruses or site claiming to be free until you sign up. I registered and downloaded BitTorrent, but the search brings me to more scam sites.
Can someone help:
-get me working copy of Cubase 5
-tell me a legit torrent download site
-just get my cpr files converted to wav files
